The
first GPS based, topographic trail map for the South Chilcotin Mountains
(SCM).
Published
in 2005 by Trail Ventures BC (TVBC).
1:75,000
main map covering approx. 1900 sq. km (44.4 km E to W and 42.8 km
N to S) including the Spruce Lake Protected Area (SLPA), the southern
part of Big Creek Provincial Park (BCPP), and the popular Mud Lakes
area. 1:30,000 Spruce Lake area inset map. Locator map with access
info. Map area stretches from Dash Ck to Carpenter Lake (N to S),
and from Mud Lakes to the headwaters of Taseko River (E to W).
Topographic
map with elevation colouring and hill shading. Contour interval: 50m
on main map and 30m on Spruce Lake inset map.
All
roads, tracks, trails, routes and majority of mountaineering routes
were GPSed from 2003 to 2005. Most logging spur/access road junctions
are shown however many of these spur roads, beyond the junctions,
were not mapped as indicated on the map.
This
map was prepared with attention to detail. Roads are rated according
to road conditions: paved, 2WD, 2WD High clearance, and 4WD. 2WD High
clearance vehicles are recommended. Likewise, trails and routes are
rated to help guide users through the map area: track, primary trail,
secondary trail, route and mountaineering route. This detail will
be of particular use in this area where trail conditions can vary
considerably over short distances. In addition, small side creeks
and trailside pond positions, not indicated on any other maps, are
shown. This is because TVBC is the first map maker to map these trails
and routes on foot – most of them several times.
Locations
of campgrounds, campsites, cabins, footbridges, major creek crossings,
floatplane landings, gates, and mine workings are shown.
Trailhead
locations are shown and UTM positions are given.
Cabins:
private cabins and cabins open to the public are indicated. Only one
cabin is purely a public cabin – the Taylor Cabin.
Grids:
UTM (Zone 10U) and lat/long. Map projection/datum: NAD83. UTM gridlines
plus gradations on the outside of map frame; and lat/long gradations
on inside of map frame.
Glacier
positions are not shown. Glaciers exist only within the eastern section
of this map. Note: most NTS 1:50,000 maps were last updated in 1979
and many glaciers in this map area have receded since then. For more
accurate and up-to-date glacier position info check the 1:20,000 provincial
basemap at http://maps.gov.bc.ca/.
Browse to ‘Provincial Basemap’. To zoom to this map area:
browse ‘Find Location’ > ‘Place Name’ then
input either ‘Vic Lake’, ‘Lorna Lake’ or Leckie
Lake’. Click on the name to zoom the map.
This
map will appeal to horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, mountaineering,
backcountry skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, and wildlife viewing enthusiasts.
Out-of-park activities involving dirtbike, quad, snowmobile (sleds)
and 4WD in areas such as Mud Lakes will also benefit from this map.
Trails
not shown on this map:
- Trails leading W from Powell Pass, Iron Pass, ‘Ram Mtn’,
and Warner Pass to the Taseko Lakes area
- Trail heading N from Lone Valley into Hungry Valley
- Tyaughton Lake/Pearson Ridge area trails
- Upper section of Leckie Ck Trail (overgrown)
- Most upper section of Gun Ck Trail – TVBC did GPS a very
faint trail/route on the N side of Gun Ck here but apparently the
trail crosses Gun Ck and follows the creek on its S side in this
area. TVBC will be checking this out.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
TVBC would like to thank Matt English of ESRI Canada for his many
contributions to the making of this map. Such an undertaking would
not have been possible without his help and guidance. We also thank
ESRI for their provision of the ArcGIS 9.0 software used to create
this map.
